I don't get this......OCD symptoms....but they claim they don't have it???!

Question:

I don't get this......OCD symptoms....but they claim they don't have it???

My friend and I talk often....well he admitted to me that he had OCD over the winter months.

He was explaining to me all the bad times he had with it.....and how he finally went to a psychiatrist to get things straightened out. He claims that he no longer has it but I find him saying this quote over and over and over again "Never mind never said that....I love her..I mean...I hate her...no....I love her...Never mind never said any of that k?" then I say k to him back and forth 4 times......He claims he has gotten rid of it but for some reason it does not seem like it to me.....

Zoloft is the drug he was put on. Does it take a while for it to kick in? He told me OCD lasts 6 months maximum....is that 6 months WHILE you are on medication? He started taking this stuff in mid-winter......He said it took 3 weeks to kick in....with that thing he is doing....it seems like he still has it? He said he just does it for fun I guess....anyone with info please share!

Answers:

Often OCD takes a new, less obtrusive form. (i.e. instead of cleaning the house 4 hours a day, the person begins organizing their wallet/bag/purse constantly). While the OCD may not be gone, the outward manifestation of it becomes more socially acceptable and therefore the person may feel "normalized".

As long as the behavior (repeating things) is not interfering with his everyday life, then I'd say he's doing ok.

Best of luck to you and your friend.
