By creating clubs and even countries, man develops boundaries that are physical, spiritual and even emotional. He is then able to relinquish personal responsibility. He can either blame or rely on the collective to make decisions for him and to ensure his protection.
The bottom line is that man's desire to be a part of a bigger process, beyond himself, is his core organismic need.
