Is This Depression?!

Question:

Is This Depression?

I get spells where I feel really low and fed up, in saying that it never lasts long about 5-6 hours, I've done online tests etc and I don't have any of the symptoms I.E sleep problems, change in appetite and the rest.

Its not bi-polar as I never go that high, when I don't feel depressed I just feel normal, not extatically happy for no reason.

I get these bouts of depression every few days and as I mentioned it only last 5-6 hours, My doctor says its just a case of being fed up but I'm not so sure.

As a kid my parents always said I was the worst sufferer, I couldn't suffer anything, If I had a cold I used to think I was dieing, I just could not suffer anything, I have a very low pain threshold.

The doctor asked if I had thoughts about suicide, I said yes, Because thats all you hear of around here, in the news, in the papers, its that horrible a place everyones commiting suicide. I don't intend to do it but its because thats all you hear about which is why I think of it.

Answers:

We all get low from time to time. That's normal. You may be feeling depressed, I can't diagnose you from here and even if I could I'm not qualified. It's just that sometimes I do have depression. It's different from the normal feelings of sadness or tiredness. I would say, if it's not interfering with your life and it's not disturbing you greatly or anything like that, there is no need to see a doctor. You can always try therapy. Most rational types of therapy like cognitive behavioral therapy have the same success rate as antidepressant medication and most insurance companies will pay for CBT. It's when you get into that weird new age shite like hypnosis and other quacked out therapies that the insurance won't pay.

You can ask your doctor about a referral to a good certified psychologist.
