Schizoeffective, Bipolar, Borderline personality?!

Question:

Schizoeffective, Bipolar, Borderline personality?

I was diagnosed 3 years ago with schizoeffective, bipolar and borderline poersonality disorder. I still have troube believing it. It seems very scary to me. The past year I have shut myself up in my house I am completely cut of for social activities. I don't know how to explain my illness to my husband, how I feel. I feel the people outside my house would run if they knew what was wrong with me. Is there any one who could help with some suggestions or how to get back into sociey. I also have problems cleaning my house ( which used to stay clean) any suggestions. Aslo some suggestions on how to explain the mental illness I have to my husband.

Answers:

I was diagnosed with major depression and BPD. My doctor never told me a diagnosis but I researched it and he then confirmed it. He said he didn't believe in labels. If you focus on your diagnoses, you won't be able to focus on your recovery.

As far as explaining your BPD to your husband, there is

www.bpdcentral.com

and you would both benefit from reading "Lost in the Mirror", Borderline Personality Disorder Demystified", and "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me."

"Lost in the Mirror" gave me the best understanding of myself and my behavior. I didn't like what I read, but it did explain my life.

You may be feeling overwhelmed by your diagnoses and depressed. No one is going to know that you have a mental illness unless you tell them.

Part of your therapy should be making yourself get dresssed, put on your makeup (if you use it), and walk around the block. Once you are comfortable with that, walk around the block twice. Keep challenging yourself and soon you will feel proud of what you have accomplished and you will find it easier to become part of society again. BPD is not curable but it is treatable. I have been in therapy (and on meds) for nine years. I have come so far, my doctor wouldn't diagnose me as such today.

You can e-mail me if you like.
My best.
