Do You Think They Sedated Her?!

Question:

Do You Think They Sedated Her?

Hi, my mum went into a mental health unit yesterday with an active mind and able to speak and think. She went in because she has depression and has an anger and attitude problem which they are asessing.

Thing is when me and my dad visited her this morning, her speech was slurry, her mind was a bit confused and me and my dad cried our eyes out to see her in that conditon.

I asked the nurse if they had done anything to her and she said all they have been doing is caring for her and taking her anti-depressants which she has been on for over 6 weeks.

Do you think she is lying and they did sedate her because if not then she is got worse and something is going on! Please help if you can, I beg you. :(

Answers:

Gosh, how awful. I do feel for you and your mum.
I think there are a number of possibilities here:
(1) they could have changed her medication or increased the dosage
(2) they could have given her something to help her sleep at night - wards are noisy places - and she was still feeling the after-effects of the sleeping pill.
(3) the shock of being there, coupled perhaps with not sleeping very well overnight and the worry of it all had affected her and made her confused.
(4) they could be changing her medication, and thus giving her a reduction of the one she is on, plus a new one and these symptoms are due to a combination of the two tablets together.

I notice that this message was posted a couple of days ago, so hopefully by now things will have improved. However, you and your dad can ask the nurse/doctor what medication she is taking and how much, and what the side effects are.

Whatever the reasons or outcome, please be there for your mum and be strong. Give her a hug when you see her, that is so important, whether she is confused or not, can hold a decent conversation or not. Words are words, hugs are real.
