Do you sometimes feel very depressed, but after?!

Question:

Do you sometimes feel very depressed, but after?

you get to the doctor's office you feel like you are normal and are afraid to make a big deal about how you were feeling before.

Answers:

Your mood may be varying for external reasons or internal reasons. A lot of people feel worse in the evening when the problems of the day have piled up, and they're worried about getting to sleep. A lot of people feel worst on awakening, which may be because their cortisol rhythm is dysfunctional due to stress. Morning was often a good time for me. When my bipolar disorder started as depressions as a teenager, it wasn't so much a time of day as these episodes of feeling profoundly low for a couple of days. Then it would just lift, in an hour or less. The feeling was hard to describe, but certainly was something I wanted to tell a doctor about, as it seemed so strange.

It makes sense to me that you're seeing your doctor for the worst that you ever feel, not the best. It's a rare depression that is unrelenting day after day. If something has interfered with your life or just worried you, leave it to the doctor to decide what to do with it. Your job is to tell the truth, not filter out what perhaps embarrasses you. The doctor will tell you if any symptom needs to be pursued further or can be ignored. Only the doctor can only do that if you share everything with him or her.
