Dont want to play sport..how do i quit?!

Question:

Dont want to play sport..how do i quit?

I have been playing football for 4 years now, and me being a sophmore next year will make it 5. I was good at football my first 3 years.I always played line, and I started every game of my life, until last year as a freshman. I was the smallest lineman, and since that was all I knew how to play I did it, and I wasnt very good. This year as a sohpmore, I planned on playing football, and playing line, cause I at least know HOW. I changed my mind, I dont really wana play, and I dont know how to tell me very suportive dad, he always talks about football with me. Also, if I do quit, I dont know wha tto say when the coach confronts me at school, because he is a teacher. What should I do?

Answers:

When delivering news to someone, we have to stay focused on what we need to say, not how they will respond. You cannot "own" or take on their response or reaction. You need to say what you need to say. It sounds like you feel disappointed that you're not able to play up to the level you once did. Say that. It sounds like you'd like to find other activities which you can do and feel good about. Say that. Try not to use negative language. Don't say "quit" Don't apologize for disappointing anyone--you're jumping ahead of the bus...Whenever anyone confronts you, you give them what's true for you. They may try to convince you to change your mind, that's okay, but they should not bully you or pull rank (I'm your Dad or I'm the authority figure/coach teacher) in order to manipulate you into their way of thinking. Say what's true for you: It's time for a change, I want to move on, whatever it is. Don't use excuses or defensive language. Stand your ground and they will respect you for it. By the way, most adults don't know how to do this; even asking is very hard. I'm impressed that you even asked and I trust you can. even as a sophomore, speak your mind respectfully.
