Go back to the shrinks?!

Question:

Go back to the shrinks?

Several shrinks say I have major depression and in the past I saw therapists, social workers and psychiatrists, while taking all sort of drugs that numbed me and sapped all of my energy. I stopped seeing them because things didn't seem to work out. Since then every year or so I have long periods of deep sadness with everyone worse than the one before.
Should I go back to the shrinks? The problem is that when I stopped seeing them I promised to myself to get out of the hole myself or die trying. If I go back asking for help would be very humilliating.

Max.

Answers:

I know from experience that it can be really hard to ask for help with depression, especially since our society pretty much says that anyone who doesn't solve their own problems is weak. This isn't always true though. Sometimes we need help from other people and who better than people trained to handle these things? I went through a similar thing several years ago. Maybe you just haven't found the right therapist for you. When I finally found the right one, she helped me to change my life. I saw her about once a week for a couple of years and she helped me tremendously. You might not need as much help, or you might need more, but it's definitely worth looking into again. Also, if the people who are helping you think that you need meds, then it might be worth trying again. I can't really blame you about not wanting to feel numb and tired all the time, but they might just need to adjust the doses and/or types of meds that you're on. Also, tell them how the meds make you feel. A good doctor will listen to you and take these things seriously. It could take a while to work these things out, but it's worth it. I hope it works out for you.
