Hey there,
I have Borderline Personality Disorder, which is the disorder that often manifests itself through cutting. I've suffered with it since I was 14. I'm 21 and I've been able to stop myself for 6mos. The truth is, there's no magic pill, there's no instant fix. It's a lifelong problem that you'll fight. But When you can say you've not harmed yourself for a long time, you feel so damn good. Therapy really helped me. I had a great therapist who specialized in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. If your therapist gives you a blank look when you ask if they have that certification, try for senond best by asking if they specialize in Cognative-Behavioral Therapy. If they don't, ask your parents or insurance company to find one who does. You can browse online too, your insurance company might have a website that has a list of doctors, categorized by specialties.
I know that it's really hard, there are time you get so frustrated you think you'll go crazy if you don't cut, and it's so hard to stop. But now that it's swimsuit season, I'm having to put pancake make up over the scars, or else forget about parties. At 14 I didn't care, at 21, they're embarrassing.
My therapist said something that really struck a cord with me though. "Right now you're in hell. I can't wish you out, but I can lend you a hand and help you climb out yourself."
Talk to the people you trust, it helps, and they can help you get through this.
When you get an urge, the best thing you can do, is distract yourself. Personally, my savior has been a tootsie pop on many occassions. It sounds weird but just the sweet taste helps. Some people have other ways, but all of them involve soothing the senses. I use taste, but you can use any of them. Get a massage or take a hot bath for touch; try popping in your fave movie, or painting/drawing for sight; good music for the ears. Also, write stuff down in a journal. I can't tell you why, but for whatever reason, keeping a journal has helped me. It feels good to write down what's going on and it's sort of like talking to someone. I wish you the very very best of luck, and please feel free to email me anytime you feel this way, because I really hope you feel better.
