My friend is thinking of going out on psychiatric disability. Who should she ask!

Question:

My friend is thinking of going out on psychiatric disability. Who should she ask advice from?

Who would know about it & what her rights are? She is living in New York City, thinks the stress is hurting her & that she should move, but she still thinks she's too mentally sick to work anywhere. She has talents & is willing to volunteer, but she has a history of having nervous breakdowns. Where can she find out about what it all entails & what her rights are? Thank you.

Answers:

This is the process for disability. Apply with social security, you can go to the office or by phone, mail or Internet. You will then have to do some phone interview process. Typically people are denied and then appeal. The appeal process is just filling out a form and sending it back in.

Only after you get denied a second time you should get a lawyer. Your benefits start from the time you apply so there is a lump sum back pay that you get and the lawyer usually takes about 25% of that. Getting a lawyer too soon can just spell more fees and should be waited till the 2nd appeal.

If you friend is not able to do this process on her own, she could get a freind or family to help her. There is also professional like couselors and social workers that can help her with this case management that she might be able to access through the public mental health system in New York.
