What do you do if you feel no driving force of motivation inside?!

Question:

What do you do if you feel no driving force of motivation inside?

i am on medicine for depression and am in therapy. i have goals and i know what i want in life. but inside, i feel nothing and can't make anything happen.

Answers:

In some cases, antidepressants will work for a while and then suddenly start having the opposite effect, and will make you feel worse, instead of better. Ugh! Downer.

This is the kind of thing you want to check with your therapist about, right away--a call between sessions is okay if you have had a mood slide.

In the meantime, try journaling, reading, or writing about those goals and those things you want in life. Can you visualize something that would make you feel worthwhile? Write it down. In great detail.

Also, remember this: the world is in a mess right now, and things really are pretty bad. Depression and a sense of directionlessness is in many ways an appropriate response. Don't start beating yourself because you are down. The Protestant Work Ethic isn't for everybody. Okay? Sometimes a good cry is the best thing.

So focus on the good things, don't worry about the state that you are in, and call your therapist foist thing in the mornin'!!

Good luck, and expect better times...
