Is messiness a sign of ADD?!

Question:

Is messiness a sign of ADD?

I have never been able to totally get on top of the clutter in my home. Some times its better than other times.

I was thinking of hiring an professional organizer and I ran across one that said in addition to helping with the clutter, she belonged to a ADD group that she could refer the client to.

I like to do more than one project at a time and then eventually the clutter makes me feel that I can't concentrate.

Answers:

It can be part of ADD, although sometimes it is just that there are so many interruptions that you get used to never being able to finish what you start. Raising kids is one example, family, friends, jobs, and lots of other things. You are often on call 24/7 and rarely have the time to complete anything. Even a non-ADD person can have a hard time keeping up in today's world.

Starting projects that you never finish, then going on to the next one is often a sign of ADD. And yes, they do accumulate and make clutter which interrupts your concentration. Then it's easy to abandon that project and start another one......which you seem more able to concentrate on......for awhile. Then on to the next one.

If you take on only one job to finish and then stick with it until it gets done, then go to the next one, without bringing home any new hobbies or jobs, you can gain a toehold on messiness. It can be done, but if you feel you can't deal with it alone, the professional organizer would be the way to go. And her ADD group sounds like a very good choice if you think you may have a problem with it. They surely have ideas that can help since they have dealt with it themselves. It would be worth checking into. It may make a major difference for the better. Go for whatever makes your life more manageable!
