Does anyone know what to do if you're depressed?!

Question:

Does anyone know what to do if you're depressed?

I have a friend who is depressed, but her family doesn't believe her, refuses to believe her, or just doesn't care. In fact, they are adding to all the pressure that is on her shoulders right now. Is there any other way to get help?

Answers:

If your friend doesn't have insurance, most counties have mental health programs and she can self-refer to the services, normally with a phone call. They can screen her for symptoms and bring her in to determine what kind of treatment would be best for her situation. In the meantime, it is important for your friend to exercise and stay away from substances like alcohol and dope. This will not help at all. Exercise is actually helpful because of the endorphins. It will improve mood.
She is lucky to have a friend like you. Give her an opportunity to talk and share her feelings, especially since it sounds like she is not getting support from her family.
Keep in mind that real depression is a medical condition and to feel better is more than, "pulling yourself together."

Symptoms of depression:
Sadness throughout the day, nearly every day
Loss of interest in or enjoyment of your favorite activities
Feelings of emptiness or hopelessness
Feeling stressed, nervous, or overwhelmed
Trouble concentrating or making decisions
Feelings of worthlessness
Excessive or inappropriate feelings of guilt
Irritability or restlessness
Thoughts of death or suicide
Fatigue or lack of energy
Sleeping too much or too little
Change in appetite or weight
Aches and pains
Headache
Back pain
Digestive problems

If your friend starts seriously thinking about suicide, she needs help immediately. I wish you both the best. Take care.
