For those who have taken Zyprexa, how has it affected your weight and metabolism!

Question:

For those who have taken Zyprexa, how has it affected your weight and metabolism?

For me it was a nightmare. I gained 40 pounds in nearly 6 weeks. Even though it has been over 6 yrs since I've stopped taking it I have been battling my weight ever since. Before this medication I was naturally skinny (size 4) my entire life and ate pretty much whatever I wanted and never exercised. After the medication it seems as though my metabolism has been permanently screwed up. Now in order to stay slim I need to work out religiously 5 times a week and keep a strict diet. After losing the 40 lbs I gained through constantly working out and dieting, after a few months of stopping the diet and exercise I gained all the weight back. I don't pig out when I eat and I do walk a lot even though I don't do conventional workouts, but it pisses me off because I used to be slim naturally and didn't have to work my butt off to get there. Has anyone experienced similar sideaffects from taking Zyprexa? Is it possible for this medicine to permanently mess up a person's metabolism?

Someone once told me that Zyprexa just makes the person retain water weight, but after going through the weight gain I know it was more than just water weight. It made my appetite extremely high and it would always make me feel as though I haven't eaten in a week. Does anyone know what is it about zyprexa that packs on the pounds?

Answers:

Myself included, everyone I know who takes or has taken Zyprexa has this problem. I gained from 135 to 210 in six months. I told the doctor to put me on something else or I would quit taking it. I went on Geodon. (It's not for everyone) Also, Lexapro. I still had to diet and exercise. My personal trainer and doctor gave me this advice. Eat 6 small portions a day (this increases your metabolism and is very healthy). Eat high calcium, high protein, low fat diets. Don't eat greasy, fatty, sugar filled foods. Stay away from soft drinks. Drink lots of water. Walking and aerobics are good exercises. I know it's frustrating. However, I hope this helps.
