How do I quit antidepressants?!

Question:

How do I quit antidepressants?

I'm on a low dose of citalopram, 10mg, which I started just over a week ago. So far they absolutely suck. They've made me so much worse. I now get shaky, I anxious, and I have increased sweating. It's a nightmare.

Before I was just depressed, but I could still function in life and deal with things. Now I can't deal with anything. I'm not as miserable as I used to be, but what's the point in having a so-so mood if you get panic attacks at the thought of any kind of social situation? It's a horrible medication.

Now I haven't taken any for 3 days. I don't plan to take them again. But will I experience any side-effects? I'm worried because I'm in the middle of my finals and I don't want this screwing them up. So far I've been feeling very, very low. Will this get better?

(Note: To people who say "don't quit cold turkey", I'm afraid there's not any other choice. 10mg is the LOWEST dose citalopram comes in. I'm not exactly gonna get my microscope and cut up the pills even smaller.)

Answers:

It often takes over 2 weeks for an antidepressant to start working. Initial side effects are common. I think you should not just quit; you are almost guaranteed more emotional side effects. If this medication absolutely will not work for you, try switching to a different antidepressant. Most of all, talk to the doctor who perscribed the medication on a regular basis.
