Can a panic attack lead to a heart attack?!

Question:

Can a panic attack lead to a heart attack?

I have been having panic attacks for several years now and I feel like it has gotten worse. Sometimes I feel like I get so nervous to the point where I am worried that I will have a heart attack. I try my best to relax, but sometimes my nerves end up getting the best of me. I was just wondering if it were possible to end up having a heart attack after a really bad panic attack. Who else goes through this? and what do you do to help relax?

I am 23 and I have been having panic attacks since I was 15. I hate it so much. My whole body gets really shaky. My heart starts to race. Sometimes I start to sweat, but there have been times where I felt really cold. I also feel like I can't breathe. I've tried sitting down and taking deep breaths, but sometimes it doesn't work.

Answers:

I just started having panic attacks last January out of nowhere. I have a lot of hardships in my life and been going thru a lot for a very long time and always stressed out, and I'm thinking that's what caused it. The first time it happened I thought I was having a heartattack and I went to the hospital but they told me my heart was fine and it was most likely a panic attack. For a whole month after that I kept having the same symptoms just about every day, which made my life a living hell because nothing was working to make me feel better including Ativan and anti-depressants. Now I feel better but the attacks still come, especially, when I'm worried about something or when I even argue with people , but the worst thing is that I can get them if I get stuck in traffic. From my experience, medications didnt work. Breathing into a bag didn't help either nor did breathing techniques. Actually these two made me feel worse because whenever I felt I was about to have a panic attack and tried the bag or the breathing thing they kind of reinforced the feeling -in my mind- that yes, I am having a panic attack, which actually intensified the symptoms. I found the best thing is to get your mind off of it by talking to or calling someone right away or getting out of whatever atmosphere you're in. My cell phone is now the best medication when I'm alone. And to answer your question, no, panic attacks don't lead to heartattacks or any physical problems, or at least that's what I've been told. I also understand that sometimes the attacks may last for years -on and off- and nothing might work.
