A Question About Panic Attacks!!!?

For over the past week I have found it very difficult to breathe...feeling that I need to take in deep breaths all the time and that Im not getting enought oxygen. I went to my doctor and he says that Im suffering from a panic attack.

The reason for the question is that I do not feel panicky in any shape or form and have been desperately trying to breathe 'normally' for two days now with no real change. Obviously I am not DEAD from breating normally but I still feel that I am not getting enough oxygen. If this is a panic attack then can anyone tell me how long it will take to settle...especially as I have not at any stage felt conciously panicy?

thanks for all your answers so far..There is an incident which coincided with the beinning of this but I had to study for hours to come up with it. I have had a pretty streesful life up until now but things are actualy okay at the minute. If this is panic then it is completely subconscious....How can I deal with my subconscious panicking?

I have been going to see a councillor and have been taking meditaton classes and regularly lying in my hot tub....does that sound stressed??? That's my issue...my doctor is generally pretty good but he refused to give me anything. He listened to my breathing but did not check my oxygen levels......sorry for all the extra info but Im answering as I find...lol

I do have hayfever...told my doc that but he said it wasnt related

XXXPLEASE READ THISXXX Hello there. I have the exact same problem and have been diagnosed to have GAD (General Anxiety Disorder) and i have had this now for nearly two years. I know what you mean about the gasping for air i do it all the time its because your thinking that you need to do this because your heart starts to race and believe that your going to stop breathing. I am really bad at the gasping for air it feels like im not getting enough air in my lungs so i try to take deep breaths.

I am doing it now whilst writing this hopefully in time ill get over it but this is the only thing that probably makes me have the attacks at the minute.

I do it alot when im hot so i try to sit outside and relax as much as possible. If you have an attack or feel breathless but a brown paper bag over yor mouth breath in deep breaths and concentrate on your breathing. you should feel better. Honestly you will be fine.
