I have never understood that either. People would rather see on tv, the newspaper, etc a disaster instead of something good and nice.
Maybe it is the chaos, maybe they have a need to feel something and the only thing that can shock them into feeling is something sad, maybe it is a feeling they get as to how bad life really isn't compared to what they just heard.
I think it fits into the catagory that misery loves company?
