What would you call this?

My friend told me that when she was a little kid like from even before she can remember to when she was about 12 a relitive that was two years older then her use to do things to her. He would make her take her cloths off and do sexual things, like one time he tried to put his penis into her she said it really hurt. Her parents and his mother found out but didn't do anything, they actually found out on two different occasions. She hated what he would do to her but didn't know how to make him stop. It still affects her a lot she's now 25 years old. I was just wondering if this would be considered sexual abuse or not. Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear what your friend went through growing up. This could certainly be considered sexual abuse. It is unwanted sexual attention if nothing else. But what is more important than defining the behavior is the fact that it still has an effect on your friend. The unwanted sexual advances are greatly disturbing, and the fact that family members did not intervene is equally upsetting. Your friend might want to seek therapy and/or a support group to help her deal with this. There are also many books on this topic in the self-help section of the bookstore. It is important to deal with this, as ignoring it could lead to greater problems with her mental health and relationships. I hope this is helpful!
