Question:
My sister takes both Prozac and Ativan for anxiety. I'm very concerned about the interaction of the two.?
My sister suffers from severe anxiety and depression. She takes Prozac, the maximum amount you can take a day then she takes 4 Ativan a day, not sure of the miligrams. This seems like an awful lot of medication. She always has all of these non descript aches and pains, she's extremely hot and then extremely cold. I'm very concerned.
Does anyone know if these two medications should be used together and in such large doses?
Answers:
The two are not contraindicated. However, it is important to note that ativan is a benzodiazapine, and highly addictive. In addition, it is possible that your sister has a non-psychiatric condition which is causing the temperature regulation problems (thyroid issue comes immediately to mind, as thyroid problems can also lead to depression and/or anxiety). If I were in your position, I would encourage my sister to consider an evaluation by an endocrinologist.
Best of luck,
