Answers:

1. Fill out an application. Indicate what your disability date is. That is, when did you become disabled. That's the date you get backpay from.

2. Gather as many medical records as possible. The more you have, the better your chance of getting approved.

3. Send in the application and medical reports.

4. Expect to get a denial letter in the mail within 90 days. But don't be discouraged and don't give up.

5. Take your denial letter to a Social Security attorney and fill out more paperwork. The attorney will file for a court hearing and the judge will review all your medical records prior to making his decision.

6. All this time, keep going to the doctor to gain more medical records. Social Security will send you to their doctor to be interviewed and you will more than likely be denied again.

7. The attorney will keep on appealing the decision until it gets approved.

Without an attorney or several medical records, you won't have much of a chance of getting approved.

It took me 3 years to get approved for SSDI and I got a backpay check for over $40,000. I had to pay my attorney $4,000 of that. I had to stay in homeless shelters during that 3 years because I couldn't work but it was worth it in the end.

Don't make the mistake a lot of people do by going through the process without an attorney. You won't likely get approved. And most importantly, don't give up. The longer it takes, the more backpay you get. Good Luck!
