Why causes tics(tourettes) to increase only when a person is under stress??!

Question:

Why causes tics(tourettes) to increase only when a person is under stress??

Answers:

This is not fully understood. All we know is that certain kinds of brain activity are increased when we are stressed and that the tic's can be associated with increased brain activity. This is why stimulant medication, used for ADHD, can actually start or increase tic's.

The correct, stick in the mud, person in me has to comment that Tourettes is a mental disorder, defined in the DSM-IV-TR. The terms mental illness and mental disorder are used interchangeably by the general public. Most, if not all, mental disorders are brain disorders. When there is less fighting among groups of mothers over one particular diagnosis (their child's) there will be less stigma. It is best to stand together for all the children. http://www.silverribbon.org/
