Question about reading problems/reading disorders?!

Question:

Question about reading problems/reading disorders?

I want to know whether it is true that reading problems can be due to visual problems and then using coloured lenses or coloured papers can help overcome the disorder. My little sister has this and a neighbour suggested this along with eye exercises. We have yet to find out more from a professional. Also, it's not that she needs glasses as we've checked her for that.

Has anyone used these lenses or this kind of treatment and if so, how was it?

Thanks

Answers:

I've heard about the kind of treatment you are talking about and it's called scotopic sensitivity i.e. using coloured lenses. There hasn't been much scientific evidence to validate the use of the lenses or papers and in fact, more research has refuted this visual-perceptual theory of reading disorders.

If your sister has been diagnosed with a reading disorder, I'm actually surprised that the psychologist did not provide you with recommendations. Reading disorders are mainly a problem in phonology i.e. the ability to decode words on teh basis of their sounds. Due to this difficulty in phonology, reading suffers. It is a genetic problem and unfortunately, your sister may have reading problems all her life. However, she may be able to receive some amount of assistance with phonological training. This may not improve her reading greatly as it is a brain based problem.

Do look into phonological training programs within your area for further help and do not rely on the stupid thing on coloured lenses and paper --- it's just a way for people to make money I guess.

Good luck with everything!
