Do you have earwigs?!

Question:

Do you have earwigs?

Not the insects, but songs that keep playing in your head:

I don't know who started calling them earwigs. I've heard about them or experienced them all my life. I forget other cures for them, but I like the above site's advice to just go ahead and listen to the song. What we hear is just a snippet, maybe the chorus or part of a verse. Somehow we need to listen to the rest for whatever it is to be satisfied.

Sometimes the reason I'm hearing the song is mysterious, but sometimes it makes perfect sense. The last time I signed out from Yahoo Answers I started hearing a Frank Zappa song, "What's the ugliest part of your body?" It was just right for what I was reading. Still I had to go dig out the LP it's on and listen a couple of times. Then it stopped playing in my head.

I read about songs like this being called "earwigs" at some point. They've never bothered me much, but I remember a girl in high school who couldn't get some popular song out of her head for an entire day. She would sing it some, but she said that didn't help. I don't remember what song it was. Now with so many portable players, she could have played it a few times like your link says, and she would have had a better day.

It says in that report of research you linked to that musicians have this more than non-musicians. Maybe that explains why some people have no idea what you're talking about.

I know that Frank Zappa song. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
