Question:
What is self-pity? Why is it dangerous? How do you know if you are engaging in self-pity? Warning signs?
Answers:
self pity is constantly feeling bad about yourself, your life, your surrounding, etc. Most people that self-pity too much will express their sorrows of themselves to others. Warning signs are if you are easily irritated, you voice your upset-ness to others (more than what would be considered normal)
Here is an example:
Normal person would say: I can't wait for my pay check to come. I really need to get my cable bill paid. It's already a week late.
Self-pity person (also known as narcasism in extreme cases): I never get paid as much as I need to. My cable bill is late. I hope they don;t shut it off. If they shut it off I dont know what I would do. On top of that, I forgot to take something out of the freezer for dinner. I always forget to do that. I forget so mnay things. I just cant seem to remember anything. I wish I could remember better. Know what else? ....etc, etc, etc.
another warning sign would be asking for people's opinions and input a bit more often than you should and also low confidence.
if people tend to try and change the subject once you start on something that you think is just normal complaining or bickering, that may be a warning sign that you are engaging in self-pity.
