How can I overcome this?!

Question:

How can I overcome this?

I was in a car accident when I was 3. Im 15 now. A drunk driver hit my car head on. I am paralyzed because of it.

But I am taking drivers ed, but worried about getting in another car accident again...

I am 'scarred'. Whenever I am the passenger in a car, and we are in the turn lane, and we are waiting for a break in the cars, and we turn, and a car is coming, I am always scared that it will bump into the back of the car I am in. Also, when you are driving and a person pulls out in front of you, I get so freaked out. Sometimes I even yell "STOP" or "SLOW DOWN". The car accident I was in traumatized me so severely. I have been to a psychologist a few times, and they said it would help a bit if I was a spokes model against drunk driving because that would get my emotions out & help me cope. It worked for a while, but now as my drivers ed course is ending, I dont think I can take the test. I mean, I REALLY want to drive, but I am so scared. Any advice on how to deal with this?

Uh, did it ever cross your mind that they have hand controls? Because they do.

Answers:

You're going to have to take your time with this. It must be tough with all your friends rushing to get their permits and licenses at 16 but keep something in mind...

16 is the minimum age one needs to be to drive a car but there's no rule that says you MUST get your license at age 16.

I didn't get mine until I was 20. Mainly because I couldn't afford a car and I could take a bus to wherever I wanted to go.

If your mind needs some more time to heal, then let it. Don't rush yourself and don't listen to your friends if they make fun of you. Real friends don't do that.

I'm sure you will be a great driver someday.

PS - I was in a bad car accident where I flipped my car but I walked away without a scratch. I thought I would never drive again because I was so scared. I drove after a month and I have no issues with it now.
