BPD in adolescent/ pre-adolescent?!

Question:

BPD in adolescent/ pre-adolescent?

Is there anyone out there with a child that is entering puberty with Borderline Personality Disorder?
Minimally, my daughter has Bipolar, I was curious to see if any other parents are dealing with this.
I am not into alot of "diagnoses" persay, I just wanted to take a poll of ones with concerns about their children & their concerns on this illness in particular.
I do know that the Dr.'s won't touch a BPD diagnosis, because it is sooo similar to adolescence agnst anyways... Thanks in advance for your input.

We have determined that there has been no kind of abuse w/ my daughter, that is why this is so difficutl to handle right now.
I was aware that 30 % of people with Borderline Pers. Disorder are NOT abused, the rest are... so knowing it is strictly chemical imbalances is flipping me out. There is Bipolar in our family, my father & my brother & my daughter's father,,, so we are not surprised that one of our children has it...

Oh, make sure that you are reading it right... she HAS Bipolar Disorder... I am now thinking she has something more serious, like one or two aspects of Borderline Personality Disorder. Much more complicated...
thanks for your answers.

Answers:

Honestly, almost every pre/teenage girl I see could qualaify as having BPD.

Of course, it is very rare for a person under 18 to be dx with a personality disorder unless it is completely obvious and everything else can be ruled out.

I would look at the childs home enviroment. +90% of BPD patients have been sexually abused or have some sort of sexual trauma. Also often the childs parents are mentally ill along with a lot of boundary and attachment issues with the Mother.

If these are all met along with DSM criteria for BPD you have a strong predictor of the disorder.

Please know if you child is ever dx with BPD its not the end of the world. BPD patients can often do very well with a combination of meds and Dialectial Behavioral Therapy.

UPDATE: If she only has one or two characteristics of BPD please do not worry about it. When someone is Borderline it becomes quite obvious very quickly. Please work on your daugthers Bipolar, one thing at a time...when you start getting more broad you all may become overwhelmed!
