Having low confidence?!

Question:

Having low confidence?

I feel i have low confidence when applying for a job. I'm 19 years old, and i look like i'm 13-15. Yeah, it's that bad. I remember when i 16 years old, i applied for a job at burger king, and when i gave the manager my application, she looked at me, and ask how old i was. I said i was 16, and she started laughing. Then she started showing my application to everyone. She said i really young. I think my confidence went down the drain that day. What can i do so my confidence can go up?

Answers:

it is not uncommon for people to be ageist (discriminate based on age) just like some folks are racist. you may look young, but if you are of age to work, then people can not (by law) deny you employment based simply by how old you look.

try to find a job where other employees look a bit young as well, this might help them be more open to hiring someone who looks as young as you. also, it may seem frustrating that you look young now, but this can often help you later down the line when you are applying for other positions.

self confidence goes a long way. make sure you present yourself professionally, that you have a nicely drafted resume and that you appear mature and responsible. sometimes this means dressing or styling your hair in ways that make you look older than you are. this might help people realize that you are serious about the interview and that you are ready to be committed to the job.

good luck!
