Two things happening when I'm tired in bed?!

Question:

Two things happening when I'm tired in bed?

I was wondering if anyone else has this happening. Well there are two things actually. One is the feeling I get right before I fall asleep. I feel like a rug from underneath me has just been pulled and I'm proceeding to fall. It lasts about half a second but it really wakes me up and freaks me out a bit. Also, voices before I go to sleep. I will hear different voices and I am not thinking about them. Sometimes they will yell my name almost deliberately to wake me up. They will be quiet voices then get louder. Sometimes male, sometimes female. I am positive it is not anyone in my family because it happens when everyone is asleep and in their own rooms. I am really trying to get rid of this but I don't know how. I do have anxieties so maybe that has to do with it? Thanks!

I am not sure if it's spiritual but I am a spiritual person, I just think it's strange that it really only happens while I'm about to go to sleep. Also, what I mean by yelling my name, it's like when you aren't listening to someone and they stop talking and say your name out loud like "uh.. hello!". Hope that helps a bit?

Thanks I'll try reading or listening to relaxing music before I go to bed. I really do think it has something to do with anxiety also.

Thanks, well to my knowledge people have passed who lived here but not in the home itself. I'm glad to hear that someone else goes through this from time to time! Yes I'm half asleep half awake when I hear the voices. As for the slipping feeling, I've heard a lot of people get that. I'm so curious as to what the heck it is!

Answers:

Not all hallucinations are bad news. Sometimes, hearing voices calling your name, or hearing a noise like a "boom" are caused by stress, sometimes by sleep deprivation, etc. The types of hallucinations you are describing are called hynogogic and hypnopompic and can mean nothing or can mean something. Either way, if it is affecting your life, then you need to get professional advice (I'd start with a neurologist before contacting a psychiatrist) to rule out any organic or electrical problems.

The following is copied from a website I have referred you to:

"Occasionally, people who are in good mental health will experience a hallucination. If hallucinations are infrequent and transitory, and can be accounted for by short-term environmental factors such as sleep deprivation or meditation, no treatment may be necessary. However, if hallucinations are hampering an individual's ability to function, a general physician, psychologist, or psychiatrist should be consulted to pinpoint their source and recommend a treatment plan."

"Hypnogogic hallucination
A hallucination, such as the sensation of falling, that occurs at the onset of sleep."

"Hypnopompic hallucination
A hallucination that occurs as a person is waking from sleep."

The bottom line...if it is affecting your life then you need to seek medical attention. If it is frustrating, but only occurs when waking or sleeping, it is probably related to a stressful day.

Try keeping a diary.
