OCD, and irrational fears?!

Question:

OCD, and irrational fears?

How does a person with OCD cope or diminish irrational fears? Such as over anxiousness when your adult (18) child or older teen (16) goes somewhere that something will happen to them. Like the 18 yr old just went two states away to visit his girlfriend, first time on plane, and they are a different religion. So I get freaked that he actually made it ok, even though flying is like 100 times safer than a car and then I think what if they convert him and he stays there? Then the younger son went to summer camp and I think about weird stuff happening to him. How do I stop or curb irrational fears? Please no smart aleck answers. I to used to not believe in mental illness, til I realized I have OCD thru my son's pshychologist.

I have had OCD all my life, and just never knew it, for lack of a better explanation. I just thought everyone's mind was the way mine is, til I found out it has a name (OCD). My son was evaluated for it, and I was in the evaluation, as then he was 16, it was then I realized I had it, and actually so does he.

The Best to You:) I've had slight OCD and panic/anxiety disorder for about 27 years now~and it is NO fun. I used to hate seeing my daughter get on the school bus! I have gotten better, and try not to worry nearly as much, but you can't ever stop totally worrying about your kids~and the people you love most in the World. I do realize now though, that I spent A LOT of time worrying about things that never happened~and realistically, worrying about those things won't PREVENT them from happening~you just drive yourself crazy. I think the best we can do, is try and teach them to be cautious and safe, and then Pray:) If you've never tried Xanax before, you might mention that to your Dr. It has been a life saver for me.
Good Luck.
And mental illness is VERY real~just look around at the World we live in.
