Ritalin and ADD?!

Question:

Ritalin and ADD?

OK, this is long but i really need an answer. I got diaognosed with ADD when I was about 7 and I've been taking Ritalin ever since. It messed with my eating habits so tried everything from adderal to stratera when I was in highschool, but nothing worked as well as the ritalin. I'm 20 years old now, in college and still on the ritalin, but I've noticed some new things. I'm naturally a fun person, but now when i'm on the ritalin, I get depressed and anxious. I can tell when the medication has kicked in because my mood changed from good to really sad or worried. I start thinking about things I shouldn't be thinking about and over analyzing everything, especially whether my friends, family or boyfriend love me anymore. Whenever the meds start wearing off, I'm in a better mood again and I stop thinking as hard. I can't afford antidepressants, and I don't want that many chemicals in my body at one time. Is there anyone having the same problem? does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

I will admit that I do worry when I'm not on ritalin. it just gets more intense when i'm on the ritalin. I didn't always notice that I was depressed on the ritalin. My father died unexpectedly about a year and a half ago. I went to therapy, and he talked about putting me on antidepressants. The ritalin works on helping me concentrate, I just don't like the mood swings.

Answers:

This can be a common side effect of Ritalin. Have you talked to your psychiatrist about it? Wellbutrin (which is an anti-depressant with some mood-stabilizing properties) has been shown to work well with people with ADD/ADHD. You shouldn't take a medication if it makes you feel worse, the point of it is to help you feel better! As I said, talk to your doctor. Good luck!
