Circumcision does not completely stop penile cancer. The American Cancer Society has already confirmed the myth that circumcision = no cancer.

People get circumcised because their parents had a doctor or religious man cut up their penis without their asking them first. Other guys get circumcised when they are older because they are insecure about their penis and, rather than accept themselves as they are, decide to instead conform to what society deems as the standard penis.
Such myths that feed this insanity are the myths of cleanliness, which in itself is a speedy and hassle-free process and is therefore a senseless argument, and the myth of appearances, because you'll be wanting someone to date you, not your penis. Of course, there is the rare case of untreatable phimosis (only rarely is it untreatable), in which case the man has no choice but to get circumcised.
Most men who propagate circumcision have no care for giving their own sons the choice of being circumcised or not, because they are rather authoritative and believe that their opinions are absolute law.
In the United States, we are used to seeing circumsized penises, so we naturally find them more acceptable and more attractive. It'll probably change in a few generations.
Some people do it for religious purposes, some for hygenic purposes.
It's a traditional practice whose purposes are to make the penis look slightly larger and less like an animal's. Hygienic reasons are only valid in settings that are less sanitary to start with - there is no appreciable difference in modern society.
Of course, most circumcision is not decided by the patient himself, but by parents - usually for religious reasons or just out of societal habit. And doctors still push the process largely for reasons of profitability. (Yes, a noted pediatrician actually admitted this.)
people do it for religious reasons. others do it for hygienic purposes. if you are circumsized you are less likely to develop infection. Also it is more socially acceptable and deemed more attractive by most women.
Either they believe myths - "it's cleaner that way", or really stupid myths like the one above "to have babies", or they go for tradition and religion.
It is still promoted by some doctors, because they make money from it. It is promoted by circumcised men (and sometimes women married to them) because otherwise they wold have to think about what they are missing.
