Try to shower before you shave, it softens the hair and skin. Make sure your razor is always a sharp blade, a dull one will drag ont he skin. Use a good shaving gel with lanolin, which will help condition your skin and make it soft. Use long, slow strokes, not fast choppy ones.
My boyfriend likes to use the neutrogena men's razor defense face scrub when he washes his face (remember, in the shower first), and the razor defense facial lotion afterward. He's Italian and his hiar grows fast, he can have a full beard in 3 days, but he manages to keep his skin clean shaven and soft doing these things. Hope it helps.
