How Do I get better at pullups?!


Question: I'm trying to get into better shape and improve my upper body strength but I have the most difficult time doing a pull up. Is there any starter exercises that could help? something to work my way up to more pull ups? what muscles do you work when you do chin ups?

Pull-ups involve your arm and back muscles primarily, with some abdominal work too. Like any strength excercise, you have to work up to it. You probably do not have enough strength yet to pull up your full body weight. Do pullups with a chair under your feet, supporting some of your weight. Start out doing several (8-12) at a time to build more strength. As you grow stronger, support less and less of your body weight on your feet, eventually losing the chair altogether.

You could probably try push ups too. I think it all works your chest and arm muscles but I don't know anything about physical fitness. I do know that the more you do it the better you get.

Do 2 pull ups the do an exercise not working areas of your body that pull ups would work. After, go back to the pull up bar and do two more, until you get to 5 sets.

After, you can move up by increasing you pull ups per set (more than 2) and/or number of sets. (more than 5)

Just work at them gradually. When I first started I could not do any. Now I can do almost 20.

P.S. you might want to get a bar at the entrance of your room. It really helps.
