Are there any tips or tricks for shaving?!

Question: My boyfriend usually shaves once a week. But he really should be shaving every other day. He doesn't because he says its painful to shave that often and his face bleeds. I guess it has to do with the stubble. Does anybody know anything he can do or use to help with the pain and the bleeding?

Do not get a cartridge razor (like a Mach 3). The best shave is with a double edge razor. The standard for that is a Merkur. I recommedn the Merkur HD. You can buy one for around $30. But it is how men have been shaving for a hundred years and can not be beat. Replacement blades only run .50 cents or so. Do a google search and you can find a ton of info. I would also recommend getting a badger hair brush (a decent one will run $25-$40) and it will last several years. But the razor glides across your face, excellent shave, much more cost effective over the long run. The badger hair brush will work the lather into the face much more effectively than using hands, which also leads to a better shave. It might take a couple shaves to get use to the new razor (do NOT press against face like you would with a cartridge blade) but once he does he will love it.

I do not recommend any electric but if you insist that route I would say the Braun Pulsonic. The Arcitic sucks, as do most other electrics. It can take up to a month for the face to adjust to a electric, and therefore get a decent shave. And he would have to avoid wet shaves completely to help adjust.

Regardless to which route he goes, HOW you shave is much more important that What you shave with. Check out the Art of Shaving. Shaving after a hot shower, using shaving cream (instead of crappy stuff from a can), pre-shave oil, and a proper after shave (nothing wth alcohol) with make the world of difference. Feel free to e-mail me with any other questions or for more detail.

get him an electric shaver. My skin is the same way if I use a razor.

Replace blades more frequently.
Use a gel shaving gel, they tend to provide more lubrication.
Shave after you shower to get your beard wet and soft.
Use a moisturizing after shave balm.

electric razor and try to get him to use a moisturizer!

I usually do it after I shower. The hot water softens the whiskers.

Apply the shaving cream to a wet face, using a circular motion that will help it soften the stubble.

Leave the shaving cream on the face for 3 minutes before shaving.

I use a Gillette Quattro, which seems to make a shave closer than the old single edge disposables I learned to shave with.

Make short strokes, in the direction of hair growth, rinse the razor after each stroke in hot water. If a closer shave is needed, shave in the direction of hair growth before going against the grain. (I really only do that for weddings, first dates and job interviews.)

If I go a few days without shaving, I usually use a beard trimmer to knock down the stubble before a shower and before I shave.

Good luck.
