Thinking about buying a straight razor... any experience with learning to use it!

Question: Will it take weeks, months, years of nasty cuts to master it? Does it shave close enough for a smooth feeling?

I used to shave with a straight razor--just because my dad did and it was different. The problem was keeping the razor properly sharpened and honed, which involved skilled (and tedious) procedures. You will need rough, medium and fine whetstones and will spend more time sharpening the razor and knocking off burrs with a strop (not strap) than shaving. The benefit is what you save on disposable razors. The downside is the time it involves, and if you don't sharpen it adequately, you're in for a brutal shave.

If you do get it properly sharpened though, it works great. Some of the best razors are made by the German company Solingen.

just read manuel and in no time you learn everything you need to know.
