Why do black guys seem to have deeper voices?!

Question: Do they have more testosterone, or is it an accent? I'm just curious.

Your voice is determined by the shape of your larynx (voice box) and how long your vocal cords are. Black people generally have deeper or more resonant voices than white people because of how their voice box is typically shaped. This isn't always the case though because some black guys have a smaller larynx and higher pitched voices just as some white or asian guys can have lower, deeper, louder or more resonant voices. But in general black people tend to have lower voices on average.

When you look at some of the most distinctive deep voices in hollywood, many of them tend to be black people.

James Earl Jones
Dennis Haysbert
Michael Dorn
Ossie Davis
Sameul L. Jackson
Danny Glover
Michael Clarke Duncan

(exceptions to the rule: Michael Jackson, Mike Tyson, Chris Tucker)

Because they're men

They don't all have deep voices, I know a few soft spoken ones.

They don't all have deep voices, what about Michael Jackson?

Because it's cooler. And Michael Jackson isn't black anymore.

The tone of your voice depends on how big your vocal chord opening is.

This is why tiny/petite people have high voices in general. And why "big guys" have deeper ones.

Hormones *do* have an effect on your voice, any guy of 11-14 can tell you when their voices "crack". As their hormones are busy stretching their chords.

They smoke
