I think it's along the lines of girls asking "Does my butt look big in this?" We all have insecurities about our bodies, and want to be assured that we are in fact "normal".
Because everything can be improved if it is not on their best state. But you're right, why can't we guys be contented about our own penises?

They just want to ensure that they might not failed in satisfying their partner....

Not everybody is happy with what they are born with eg looks , ability, wealth, etc.
In the present case, perhaps its just a question of inferiority complex, or the guy is thoughtful as with his big stick, he may hurt the girl .

Because a lot of men watch porn movies, and the stars in those are generally rather well 'developed'. So when a man then sees his own size he begins to worry whether anything is wrong or if its the right size girth etc.
I think some men ask just to make sure that they are taking care of their partners needs...
A little insecure...But aren't we all as humans. My partner asked me that last night, and it shocked me....but I understood that he just wanted to make sure he was making me happy.
Thank the porn industry for giving guys a completely wrong picture of what sex should really be like. Most guys learn about sex by watching porn, and if you watch porn you learn (incorrectly) that in order to be a good lover you have to be hung like an elephant and you have to last a long time. You also learn (incorrectly) that foreplay on a woman takes no more than 2 minutes but she can give foreplay to a man for half an hour or more. The only thing you learn from porn that is even close to correct is the bit about women wanting a man that can last a long time (and not all women do -- many women say anything longer than 10-15 minutes starts to get painful). The rest is crap -- 95% or better of women wouldn't get anywhere near a guy that's hung like a porn star, they prefer men who take their time on foreplay, and they don't necessarily like to spend all day giving their guy oral (but most women don't mind as long as the guy returns the favor).
Same reason women are always worried about their breasts.
