What happens if a man (around age 16 or 17) decides not to masturbate for personal/religious/other reasons? I know his equipment won't fall off, but will it all come out in his sleep? I know I sound stupid, but I really don't know.

No is the answer to "it all has to come out". What is not expelled is re-absorbed by the body.. converted back for energy. The human body wastes very little resources.
it can be pleasure, lust, boredom, away to get to sleep, addiction, habbit. Away to get an erection if there is a problem in that area.
The most common I would say is that there is neither no one around to have sex with, or sometimes its easier and quicker to do it yourself as you know what you like and can get it over and done with fairly fast if needed.
Most people masturbate, it's not just men. I guess you are in the small minority who don't. Well most women do it too. Masturbation is a manual stimulation of the genitals (usually to get an orgasm) so as you can see that applies to both sexes and just because you are a girl it doesn't mean you can't know anything about it...yikes...most people just get an urge to do it which is why they do...you get a sex drive around puberty, it's a reproduction thing...
You know why people do it? Cos it feels really, really nice. And it's natural to do it. If a man doesn't masturbate he will probably get more wet dreams than one who does, oh and miss out on a whole lot of fun.

silly is wanting to know and not asking. You don't sound silly at all. Good for you for asking. Teen agers masterbate because they are at their sexual peak. They have very strong desires no matter what their beliefs. And if they don't masterbate it is not unusual for them to have a pleasant dream and then wake up messy. That can happen even if they do masterbate but especially if they don't.
i know that by not masturbating you build up sexual tension. when you masturbate you release that tension, as well as testosterone. when i dont masturbate i feel it gets me "worked up" in a way when im doing sports or lifting or such. i have no proof but i feel that masturbating is directly correlated to aggression, up to a certain degree.
