Wht is it intellegent people have drinking problems?!

Question: ...because there are usually other issues going on in their lives. Alcohol is one way to self-medicate mental issues and emotional pain. Once you start down that road, then it can become uncontrollable - so it's not always how much you drink, but 'can you stop after you have ONE drink'. Even if it's once a year.

Intelligent people smoke as well. Intelligent people do drugs....Intelligent people drive very stupidly.... Intelligent people get their girlfriends pregnant. Intelligent people get pregnant from their boyfriends. Intelligent people kill other people..... Intelligent people sell drugs. Intelligent people commit suicide...Intelligent people do stupid things....and the list goes on an on ad nauseum.

It helps turn off the thoughts.

Because they see problems what others can't.

b/c they are stressed out from work they just need to let loose sometimes

clears the mind

idk they just like to drink

Because most intelligent people are only book smart.
A lot of them seem to lack in common sense.

so you've never had a drop in you life i take it.

Maybe they're just not thinking. You can be the smartest person in the world and still have a drinking problem. Drinking is such a temptation and an addiction that it doesn't matter how intelligent you are. It's a spiritual and mental problem.

I consider myself fairly intelligent, and I don't have a drinking problem, so therefore your question has no basis in fact. Maybe you need to get drug and alcohol counseling for yourself and stop trying to blame your genetics.

Same reason intelligent people get cancer. It's a disease.

They get addicted just like everyone else.

people keep asking me this question

Addiction is a mental illness.

some times its hard been an intellectual
lonely, demaning and people expect a lot
drinking is an escape

Because we are intelligent to know we have problems and we try to solve everything. Stupid people drink too but they lack the ability to reason things out.

Cause, there brain is light years ahead of the average. So, drink, puts them on a lower IQ!!!!! Lonely life, no one is perfect, outcome!!!

As mentioned, drugs and alcohol stop, slow, or blur the thinking processes, so some rest can be had.

It ain't easy being a creative genius!

They do? Bill Gates is pretty smart he doesn't drink. So is Steven Hawking and Albert Einstein and they don't drink. I'm not that smart and I do drink. Hmmm.... I'm not sure your question is a good one

Genetic predisposition (i.e. addictive tendencies) is not altered by a person's intelligence or lack thereof.

idk

they use to get away from the pains of there child hood and life

or drink it just to show how kick *** they are because there tormentors are now working for them or suttin

im smart i dont drink

im under age

it can help them Get rid of the stress.

Not ALL intelligent people have drinking problems, but I know many HIGHLY intelligent people who do. I think really intelligent people can often be very idealistic, which can in turn cause them to burn mournfully when life doesn't meet their expectations. This woe is the world attitude makes them want to escape life and alcohol is the cheapest and only legal way to do so. Interestingly enough, I see the same problem with many unintelligent people. They are discouraged by the realities (verses the idealities) of life and escape their plight with alcohol... far better to be of average intelligence and be optimistic about life and the world.

While it is true that some very intelligent people throughout history have had drinking problems, however, do not rule out that people who are not so smart also have the same affliction.
There is a difference between common sense and smartness.

NOT all intelligent people have drinking problems. Not all people whom you might want to consider as being intelligent, even drink at all. Not all drunks are intelligent . . . Obviously, you know at least one who is both intelligent and drinks.

My question . . . Why don't all the people who have a drinking problem ever wise up? After all, when you look at over indulging in alcohol; that's pretty stupid. Only stupid people act stupid and do stupid things . . . Not people that are intelligent.

They're so smart, they're dumb.

Apparently they are not that intelligent....

People from all levels of intelligence can have a drinking problem.

I know from personal experience being intelligent can, in some ways, be a curse. As far as IQ tests go I'm in the 125-135 range which is somewhere in the in the high 90th percentile of people.
So for me personally I have a difficult time interacting with people, which leads me to drink in social situations. There is also the feeling that people (profs, family, friends) expect more of you because they know you're intelligent, and the fact that personally I read too much and tend to get into negative thought patterns because of it. (ignorance is bliss) Also in some ways there might be a sense of entitlement, especially with people who are highly intelligent and successful.

cause they are really stupid people.

if they are that smart they would know they are killing themselfs in the long run and if they drive while drunk they just are complete morons.

which proves they are not that smart at all

well if they have a drinking problem then they're obviously not that intelligent....
