Painful, swollen, discolored scrotum?!

Question: will be going to er, so dont tell me to take him to a dr... i just wanna know what could be wrong before we get there.. (he insisted going to school since it is only a 4 hour day, stated it didnt hurt that much..)
10 year old male, pain started about a week ago in the scrotum/testicals.. no prior trauma.. today wakes up and they are swollen and very dark, kind of looks like circulation is cut off.. still painful when walking.. any ideas?? thanks,

Yes, follow your doctor's recommendations and go to the ER immediately. The potentially devastating problem that has to be ruled out is "testicular torsion" (a twisting of the testicle on it's stalk of blood and spermatic vessels), which can destroy the testicle if not treated promptly. It is considered a surgical emergency and in my experience a urologist will take the time to examine a potential testicular torsion at any time of the day or night.

Although often diagnosed on physical exam, oftentimes a "Doppler study" is done, which can determine if the blood supply has been compromised. The equipment for such a Doppler is rare outside of a hospital.

Alternative diagnoses include torsion of another, less dangerous, structure in the scrotum, or an infection of the epididymis (the spermatic vessels at the top of the testicles), contusion of the scrotal wall.

I had the same problem when I was a kid. Probably injured himself somehow, maybe a bike seat, playing ball, who knows with kids. Do take him to a doctor and skip the er, they will treat him sytomatically and not look for the real problem. A Urologist should be consulted. It will be less trumatic for him as well being in the privacy of a doctors office as opposed to a busy er where everyone knows he has problems with his testicles.

you definately want to seek a doctors opinion. pain is always a sign when something is wrong, but not always present at the time of a severe problem. perhaps he vas been experimenting and is tooo embarassed to discuss with his mom. only answer for this is the one you dont want to hear. TAKE HIM TO A DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

should be checked by your DR ASAP...may just be infection but don't let it go !

i just wanted to say that i'm really sorry to your testicles. goddamn.
