My man eats like a football player, but he's NOT. How do I curb his appetite!

Question: I love my husband, but he has the world's worst nutritional behavior. He used to be a football player, but he's 34 now, and he hasn't played sports in years. He still eats like he did when he was training, though!

He wants to lose weight, because he will be starting a physical training program for his career in law enforcement. But he thinks that if he starves himself all day, and then has a huge dinner right before he goes to sleep, that he's going to get healthy.

He's a very intelligent man, so I can't understand why he gorges himself on all kinds of crap when we have a kitchen full of healthy foods.

So guys, I'm asking you... How in the world can I educate my man?

Men get math and numbers. Have him figure it out and see for himself how many calories he needs. You can go here: http://www.sheerbalance.com/nutrition_ca...
and have him just chug in the information, then show him how to read the nifty food information panels on everything--like the junk in the cabinets he gorges himself on. If he really wants to lose weight, once he sees the numbers and does the math, he'll be more receptive to changing his habits.

As for the gorging himself on crap... there's no reaching him on this. The crap must be gone, plain and simple, or he will eat it. Men are creatures of habit like you wouldn't believe. We do the same things day in and day out because we can and it's familiar and will only change those habits out of sheer necessity. You tell him how much better he'll feel if he loses the weight, how hard he'll have to work when he starts that physical training program and he doesn't really want to be the dude in the back huffing and puffing on the treadmill, and if all else fails you use straight up guilt that you have no intentions of letting him eat his way to a heart attack, whatever it takes to get him to accept that the crap will no longer be purchased and kept in the house. At that point, if he wants to eat, he'll find something he likes out of the healthier foods in the house.

Try a wide variety of healthy foods to get this to work. Remember that men like different foods and crave different foods than women. If he can't live without ice cream, you get him sorbet. Carnivore on your hands? Beef jerky is an excellent source of lean protein. Fast-food burger addict? Keep lean hamburger or ground turkey in the house, and get you some burger recipes of this here internet thing. Be creative, try things you never thought of--breakfast, dinner, snack foods, whatever he eats in the house make like Martha Stewart and introduce him to the wide array of healthier eating options he has and you will be able to find foods that he enjoys enough to make them his new habits. It'll be tough, but it can be done.

Find things that are very easy to prepare AND good for you.

im nto a guy but take him to the doctor just for a regular physical an let him ask the doctor himself what he recommend for HIM. it is hard to loose weight i mean i havent been able todo it but its common sense. eat the foods ou like but a little less then normall, drink waer and try to maybe take the stairs or walk around your yard something s imple will ma ke a differance.

Your not his mother, he is 34 for christ's sake

Well my dad was just like that, he took Hydroxycut for a while and lost some baggage. I would make sure its ok if you're gonna consider using it or any other weight loss pills.

Buy telling him. Try volunteering to cook dinner for him and making him something healthy. To show him that it isnt so bad. Or get him to start excersing again to use up the energy.

Hop on board the healthy train with him and set fitness goals for both of you and for his career. OR a goal for that vacation to the beach in a year. Gym memberships, trainers... yada yada. Lean meats and no fast food.

Tell him to switch it around. eat big in the mornin, so he can burn the calories throughout the day, instead of letting them turn to fat as he sleeps.

Tell him that he needs to eat his three meals a day, and that he can eat whatever he wants. Because it isn't about what you eat, it's about how much you eat. Tell him that everyday after dinner or after lunch, or whenever he can he should go for a jog. Jogging helps the body stay in shape and it's a easy way to balence your diet.
Also, as unmacho as it is, green tea is a great way to curb hunger. Drink a cup a green tea 30-60 minutes before a meal and it should help him feel like he needs to eat less.

Hope this helps.

Find a book on nutrition from a reputable author...one that has proof in it showing the benefits of many small meals a day as opposed to one huge one and how it will basically decrease your metabolism and put your body into starvation mode so it will hold onto all that fat, instead of many small meals which will increase your metabolism and increase your satiety level as well. There are many good books out there on nutrition.

He will actually gain weight with eating habits like that. What is happening is he is storing all of that food and with no exercise while he sleeps it doesn't burn away.

What he needs to do is first start eating healthier foods. And there is actually plenty of foods that taste good and are good for you. He should also start breaking down his meals into smaller more frequent meals, around 5-6 meals a day.

As for the exercise part of it. No need putting it off until later. Believe me it will never happen. Get started now have him make a daily workout schedule and stick to it. At the link below is on military.com. I'm not sure if you have to be a member to view the articles or not, but if you do its free and takes about a minute to join.
