Swollen Legs?!

Question: This Q isn't for me, but I wanted to ask because I am very concerned with my brother who doesn't really do anything about it, and when he does, the doctors don't.

Basically he is a big lad, he's 19 and large, but his legs, right leg especially is incredibly swollen. even applying light pressure is painful for him and I'm really worried about him :(

He also can make indents with his finger in his leg to which is worrying, as these can sometimes be several cm deep.

Has anyone heard of a similar case?

He won't really do much because he says he doesn't care about himself and he has low self esteem and has clinical depression.

I just really want to help even though we spend most of our time at each others throats as I'm his younger 14yr old sister.

Google, Edema. This is what the problem is. It will list different reasons for this ailment and solutions to help ease the symptoms. Your brother weather he thinks he needs to or not needs to see a doctor, be frank with the doctor and tell them " hey I know I am overweight don't tell me that...tell me what I can do to make my leg better". Some physicians can only see a large person and don't get beyond that..his depression could be caused by being uncomfortable and in pain all the time.

ADDED: Edema can eventually cause leg ulcers and sometimes it can be so severe that they have to amputate the affected area...it is not something to ignore.

you should really go to the doctors as this could be a restriction of blood flow

ok, im no DR. but it seems like an enfection..? get him to a DR. ASAP!! it coould be REALLLY dangerous.. ={

good luck, i hope he gets better ={

if one leg is larger than the other and painful then he must see a doctor as soon as possible. He can at any time go to a clinic or ER and get a second opinion, that is his right as a patient..yes he should see a doctor about it...in rare cases it could be a blood clot or the beginning of cellulitis infection if it also turns red.

In general, both legs swelling with indent is called pitting edema. Walking, do not add salt, and if blood pressure is up consistently then he might need a diuretic.

Sounds like the depression has to be solved, and then he might take his health more seriously. Many young people today live sendentary lives not getting exercise and gaining weight...and unfortunately that is the result....poor health that will only get worse..if he does not take the initiative to take care of himself.

This is not your job. The best thing you can do for him is to be a role model on taking care of yourself. Going about your day, exercising, eating right, and living your life with moderation and pursuing your goals..and having fun. Let him know you love him..but you cannot get mired in it..as that is not good for you.

Yes, please tell him to go see a doctor, otherwise he will develop a more serious condition. If he keeps ignoring this he may end up being hospitalized. You are younger and seem to think more grown-up than your brother, you're a good little sister.
Tell him not to be depressed, listen to happy music, get out and mingle with people in a mall, library
anywhere there's a crowd. Everyone seems to be worried
about something or other so tell him he's not the only one.
He should be proud of you! Good Luck !!
