How much tuna is too much?!

Question: My husband eats about 3/4 cans of tuna week (white-albacore) after lifting. I mentioned that he may be eating too much and tuna could have mercury in it. Is this something to be concerned about, should he limit it?

Ya R, its very high in protein but you are correct in being concerend... no more then 2 cans per week.... He can find other foods high in protein and low in fat...

THERE IS NO BODY BUILDERS EATING 8 CANS A DAY!!!! IF THERE IS HE PROBABLY IS GROWING GILLS!!

No more then one or two per week - because of mercury.

Here is a link to an article in USA Today regarding the amount of tuna that is ok to eat. Really, it has to do more with pregnant women and women of child bearing years.

Canned light tuna comes from skipjack species of tuna, which are smaller and often younger. They haven't been around long enough to accumulate methyl mercury in their systems, while albacore is harvested older and therefore contains more methyl mercury.

Hope it helps.

i've been hearing about blue fin tuna lately , it's supposed to be under a possible ban per FDA shortly . i eat 2-5 cans a week depending on my mood . it's the larger fish eating the smaller fish that contains the most mercury . it is worth looking into .do you suppose we should stop dumping mercury contaminated things in the ocean or tell people to stop eating from the ocean ?

i used to eat a can of tuna with two table spoons of peanut butter every night before bed when i played football. I didn't have any problems other than my butt would stink and my girlfriend didn't like it too much when i would dutch over her when we would go to bed.

well i eat alot of tuna also..around 2-3 per day....and i have yet to get mercury poisoning....i know some guys at the gym that eat 8 cans a day...just go to the doctor if he is noticing in weird changes..other than that he should be ok

He should take Omega 3 instead and cut back on the tuna.

When the mercury comes out of his ears just turn him upside down and use him as a thermometer :)

Well, with the mercury level in must fish I would guess around 2 or three cans maybe less. And yes he should be concerned about the mercury in tuna. That's my opinion.

First link recommend to take 6 oz albacore tuna a week, take either salmon, or Omega 3 fish oil instead for the other portion.

I've heard its ok if hes healthy. go online ...only way to be sure.

I would not be too concerned about the amount of mercury, but I would think that the tuna would have other affects on him. I would recommend against it if that was my household though.

A week? Heck I eat tuna every night and my wife loves it!!
