I had this problem when ascending and descending. My doctor wrote a prescription to allow me to have something to drink during both times (required by most airlines in order to have a drink). I was to take a sip every 6 - 10 seconds. It really helped. But, I believe sucking on a hard candy or possibly chewing gum would do about the same thing. As long as you can swallow to relieve some of the pressure.

Pinch your nose close your mouth and blow a big bubble of air inside your mouth you should hear a pressure equalization pop sound

Your eustaken tubes are a little closed up those are the air channel in your throat that goes to the inner ear and needs to open and close all the time

chew a gum..and chew it real hard! and fast! while the plane is landing

Landing on a plane is like diving down into a poop really deep. The pressure is pushing on your ears while the pressure in your ears is low so you must hold your nose and gently blow out to equalize the pressure. It's totally normal. Your ears will "pop" Another thing you can do is yawn. You know when you yawn and you kinda hear a clicking noise in your ear? The equalizing the pressure. To have sore/ringing ears is totally normal and happens to everybody.

Suck candy or chew gum during flight. This encourages swallowing. Yawning also activates the muscles that open your eustachian tube.

Clear your ears regularly upon takeoff and landing. Do this by gently blowing while pinching your nostrils with your mouth closed . Repeat several times during descent to equalize the pressure between your ears and your environment.

Try filtered earplugs. These slowly equalize the pressure against your eardrum during takeoff and landing. You can purchase these at drugstores, airport gift shops or your local hearing clinic.

GUM
