60 yr old gaining weight with increased exercise?!

Question: At 60 yrs old I find myself trying to lose weight. I had a knee replacement in Aug 07. I've always been very active, racquetball 3 to 5 times a week softball couple times a week, hiking, biking on occassion. Since I had my knee replacement, I've slowed down some. No racquetball, no softball. All I've been doing are basically rehab type exercises, recumbent in-place bike, eliptical machine, and weight training, with focus on legs, but also abs and upper body every M, W, F and sometime on Sat. I've been watching my intake of carbs and calories, to a degree, but we are not big eaters anyway, and mostly veggies and fruit, chicken, fish etc. Yet I am heavier now (5'9" at 205 lbs) than I've ever been except when I was playing football in my 20's . I'm at my whits end. How can I begin to loose some lbs without going on some screwy diet?

One of two things...

Either you are gaining muscle mass or you are gaining fat mass.

This site will tell you how many calories you should eat. Type in your target weight. Pick an activity level and see what the number is.

It seems to me that you are burning a lot fewer calories than you used to.

It you are really at your wit's end and want to lose weight, you will have to eat fewer calories.

I am over 350 and I eat between 1300 and 1500 cals a day. I have lost a pants size in five weeks.

You can do it.

Ok maybe if your not seeing weight being put on like you belly or butt then with the cardio that your doing you are puttin on muscle that could count for the added weight.

good luck keep exersizing

You're losing fat and gaining muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. Don't worry about it at all, itss good. As long as you do do things to get your heart rate up and sustain it for awhile.
Ever notice how youngs guys go in the military and come out looking better than they ever did? Same thing. They lost the fat and replaced it with muscle.
I myself in my military life, went from 205, to 170, to 155, to 175. Stayed at 175 for 15 years then got out. Now I'm back to 205 again, but its a pretty good 205. Not much flab.
