It's the battery and other equipment for the helmet cams. They used to wear battery belts or fannypacks for the helmet cams on the original. I think they switched to the backpacks because they are more waterproof, and the backpacks are more secure on the contenders.
I just wish that the Gladiators weren't allowed to use the backpack straps to pull the contenders in on Hang Tough.
To protect their backs if they fall?
I think it has something to do with a camera mounted on their head or something. Love the show though!!!
