it is best to use a combination of things. our bodies are amazing things. if you do the same thing all the time, it adapts and you will reach a point where you wont grow any more. the best way to get all you can is to mix it up. bench is great. i do three sets. one with the bar high, one in the middle and one down low. i change which one i start with, and will throw in flies with dumbells, the same basic high, medium and low positions. you can also incline or recline your bench to hit them from slight different directions so they dont have a chance to adapt and will grow as much and as fast as your body can do.

Bench press along with a pec dec routine, go heavy and hit this minimally twice a week... Push ups every night in between.

and the amount of reps depends on a lot of things, just try and see how many you can do it in one sitting, and then base reps/sets on that

also, don't start off with too much weight

great answers so far but wide spred on your arms will build chest muscels the best when working out.
