Antidepressants changed my man?!

Question: My boyfriend was recently put on Zoloft and colonapin (excuse spelling) for stress. It has changed his personality completely! He is no longer interested in anything he used to be, has no sex drive, and seems almost mean now. He was never like that at all. He seems to take what his doctor says as gospel. Would be appreciative of any suggestions!

i've had that problem with myself. he needs to be put on a different combo of meds. because fixing one problem and causing another, isn't going to help him in the long run.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions! All of you were so helpful and made me think of new ways of approaching it. God Bless! Report It

  • That's strange. Zoloft did the exact opposite for me. I went from being mean, grumpy, and antisocial to social and usually in a happy mood.

I would call his physician and tell him how his personality has changed for the worse. The doctor isn't going to know how the medication is doing without you telling him.

No sex drive is a common side affect. He has to decide if he likes it more now or the way he was for himself.

yeah anti depressent often do change personalities which can make the person taking the pills emotionless (which does include sex drive) I would tell him that he's changed and that you think he should see about another anti depressent to take. but most anti depressents are like that

Well the loss of libido (sex drive) is likely the Zoloft. This is a very common side effect of SSRIs.

Irritability is one of the "see your doctor now" side effects of Zoloft. Does his heart seem to be racing?

Clonazaepam is a very, very potent sedative. It also has side effects of personality changes. I would think the sedation and the fact that these medications chemically alter his brain.

I would suggest gathering information on these medications and journal a few observations of his changes of was vs now and gently present to him the changes and that you are concerned. It's a tough balance of life and chemistry.

I suggest you take him off the pills.
