Uncircumsized boy with infection?!

Question: my 8 year old son is not circumsized, and seems to have an infection under the skin., he complained about pain and said pus came out. (i know its gross) i told him he had to show me what he was talking about, and it also appears swollen and red. any suggestions? im not rushing him off to the hospital...so dont even say that. he has been given antibiotics 3 times in his life and all caused allergic reactions requiring medication and hospitalization once.

please, serious answers only... no lil 13 year olds trying to sound smart.

would peroxide be safe to use in this area? bacitracin?

If you are in the US contact NOCIRC http://www.nocirc.org/centers/centers.ph... and ask for advice from a local contact. They may refer you to a foreskin-friendly doctor who will do their utmost to cure the problem and preserve his foreskin.
Harriet may be right that it is separation and smegma coming away. He probably was still attached till recently and so there was no cavity for germs to collect in but as the natural adhesions break down they convert to a type of smegma and are expelled from the foreskin opening.
I think though that the pain and redness indicates an infection.
Take the list of antibiotics he is allergic to and there is probably another one they can try, or a mild topical cream.
DO NOT USE PEROXIDE ON A MUCOUS MEMBRANE LIKE THE INSIDE OF THE FORESKIN AND PROTECTED GLANS.

Honeslty, I had a very similar problem for years, many diff medications didnt remove the pain and redness and inflammation, and I ended up having to be circumsized, which fully solved the problem.

Obviously that's thinking really far ahead in your case, but you need to see a doctor about it without a doubt.

That infection and where it is should not be dealt with at home! You need to teach him how to clean himself by pulling back the skin and cleaning it when bathing! You don't want to go to a doctor or hospital but you are not thinking straight!

you should go to the doctor..get it checked out...

bacitracin for the redness, make him a doctors appointment he needs to be seen.

If there's pus you're probably past the point of dealing with surface treatments and past the luxury of choosing whether to involve a doctor. You can try them, but they probably won't work. Are you aware that Bacitracin is an antibiotic? Are you sure he won't have a reaction to that? This is probably a result of improper cleaning, so once you get this cleared up, you should probably go over hygiene again.

Do not use peroxide ot bacitracin, please don't. you do need to take him to the Dr. Do you remember the antibiotics that gave him allergic reactions? If you do then tell the Dr. which ones he can't have.
He may only be allergic to those specific antibiotics , but not all antibiotics.
He has to be treated by a Dr. theres not an at- home treatment for an infection that is puss producing.

yes peroxide is good to use and make sure he is keeping it clean daily thats very important you dont keep clean and that could happen to anyone i hated baths and showers at that age

i/ve heard that not beingcircumsized can cause bacterea and fungus if not kept cleaned properly maybe thats what caused the problem

As a first solution you can use some cool camomile tea which is known for its antiseptic properties. Then please visit a dermatologist. Since im uncircumed i came across this alot and once got serious. The solution was the use of some antiseptic solutions and an antibiotic ointment (no allergic reaction will be caused since its mild stuff). This usually does the trick. Please dont try anything by yourself. Hope i helped, good luck!

pull skin back and wash, soap and water.
peroxide is safe.. try some watkins petro-carbo salve.

What kind of a mother would not seek medical attention for something like that? How would you feel if your vagina was sore and infected and someone told you you couldn't go to the doctor? Take him and tell them about his previous problems with antibiotics. There are other kinds of medication he can take. Let a professional treat him for Christ's sake!

It's possible that the pus is smegma? Or are you sure it's pus? Just checking because I know some people see smegma in that area and think it's pus. And the pain could be separation trauma, if his foreskin is separating from the glans (usually causes pain and redness for a couple of days, and smegma appears). But if his foreskin is already retractible then it couldn't be that.

On the topic of retracting the foreskin, if it's not already able to be retracted then don't force it! Unlike what some people are saying, you don't need to pull it back to wash under if it's still attached.

It sounds like an infection and as you probably know he would need antibiotics...if you don't want him to get those then you could just try keeping it well-washed and dried, some people also try garlic and stuff...

But I think it sounds serious enough that you should take him to a doctor, they may be able to try a different antibiotic after all there are lots of types...

Don't listen if they suggest circumcision, it would be way overboard for a minor infection, and very traumatic at this age...

I really don't think you should put anything like peroxide down there, it's way too sensitive.

I agree that you should teach him how to pull back the skin and wash himself. I think it really depends how long this condition has persisted. If you are talking about within just the past 12 hours then just have him wash himself thoroughly with anti-bacterial soap.

Don't use alcohol or peroxide because it will burn really bad. If his condition worsens take him to the ER immediately. If it doesn't improve in the next few days (assuming he's washing) then still see a doctor.

I know you don't want him to be given anything that will make him worse but as long as you are forward with the doctors they will be able to treat him with expertise better than off yahoo answers. And you don't want it to get to the point where the infection spreads to other parts of his body - like his heart. Its rare, but it can happen.

I had the same trouble myself periodical until puberty but consider myself to be extremely fortunate not to have ben circumcised. I would go to almost any extremes to avoid having this barbaric thing done to a helpless boy child. I base this answer in part on what adult women have told me about relationships with men.

Our son now 18 was not circumcised no was our 2nd son. We was not told by any one on how to keep it clean until it was too late. Our oldest was maybe 5 and he complained that it hurt when he went pee, we took him in and he was like your son, then we was advised on how to take care of it. He ended up getting cut(we had to watch that closely)after we knew what too we began working with our youngest. We told him and showed him how to pull the skin back and wash it. I know this can lead to other things when they are older but they are going to do that anyway they are just boys. The skin on our older boy was way to tight, it would not re-track in any way shape or form with out some pain, and you sure do not want to push it back so hard that it rips. I had a hard time with it and my wife had to do it. Even though he is my son it is a man thing. But chances are he will have to have the skin removed. Until then just try and wash it with warm soap and water, let it soak a little and keep it clean until you can get him in. Monday is a holiday so ER might be your only other option. But he need to have it taken care of. You sure do not want them to remove the penis because of an infection and yes it has been done mostly too older guys who did not take care of it, from not knowing or just got lazy, some have just become ill and they were unable to.
Good luck to you both

If he has had this problem for over a week, you need to take him to a doctor. Period, end of discussion. Wanting to save money and try to find a home remedy is one thing, but when you kid has a medical condition (that you can't treat because you don't actually know what is causing it), they need to be seen by a professional. You don't know if it's a bacterial infection, a virus, some kind of toxin, an allergic reaction or just a rash. You need to find out first before you start giving him experimental treatments. If you don't like your doctors answer or advice, then get a second opinion from another doctor. But if they telll you he needs antibiotics and are aware of his allergies, then follow the advice of the doctor. If he breaks out in hives because of the antibiotics, then sue the hospital but cross that bridge when you come to it. Don't be a neglectful parent because right now your kid has an immediate problem that needs to be addressed, not a possible future problem that may or may not happen! Good luck.

BTW, when you see the doctor be straightforwards and upfront with him. Tell him you don't want your son circumcised. That will force him to consider alternate and less radical treatments first. This doesn't sound like a serious enough problem that would warrent a circumcison so don't be pressured into going that extreme.

i honestly would take him to a doctor and have him circumsized. there arn't problems like that. i never did understand why parents dont circumsize there baby boys.
